How to Apply Sunscreen Correctly
Are you applying your sunscreen correctly? Most people hop out of the car, hoof all their gear on hot sand, select a spot to unpack, then proceed to lather themselves in sunscreen, and immediately hop in the water. Has this ever happened to you? If so, you’re not alone.
It’s tough when you bring the little ones to the beach and it’s especially difficult when they’re chomping at the bit to get in the water. However, if you apply sunscreen ineffectively it ruins the efficacy of your sunscreen.
By following these simple tips, you can improve your relationship with the sun and sunscreen.
- Apply in sections starting from top to bottom. This will prevent you from forgetting spots.
- When applying to your face dot your cheeks, forehead, nose and chin then make small circles to ensure it rubs in properly
- Make sure to double check the back of your neck, ears, and scalp as these areas are commonly forgotten about.
- Wait 20 minutes after applying to go outside in the sun. This allows the sunscreen to sit properly.
- Reapply under the shade after each swimming session regardless of water resistance rating.
Whether you’re hiking with the family or heading to the beach for a day trip it’s vital to mitigate your sun exposure. Sunscreen can only do so much, be mindful of when your body feels like it’s gotten too much sun and take a break in the shade to cool off.
Additional Sunscreen Application Tips
- Stay hydrated this will keep your skin cool and assist your skin’s natural defenses from excessive UV
- Monitor your skin for signs of sunburn. If your skin feels warm or if you notice a family member is looking red, warn them.
- Consider wearing UV protected clothes to give your skin a break from the sun.
By integrating these tips into your beach or outdoor routine, you'll not only improve the effectiveness of your sunscreen but also protect you and your family from sunburn and long-term sun damage
