What Is Helios?

Helios is a natural sun paste made with simple ingredients to prolong your sun exposure and protect your skin from burning.

But, what exactly is Helios? It's a blend of Non-nano zinc oxide, Thanaka, Beeswax, Shea butter, Coconut oil, Cacao powder and Cinnamon oil.

Non-nano Zinc Oxide

Non-nano zinc oxide is a mineral compound widely recognized for its effectiveness as a physical sunscreen agent. Unlike its nano counterpart, non-nano zinc oxide particles are larger than 100 nanometers, which prevents them from being absorbed into the skin. This characteristic not only enhances the safety profile of the ingredient but also ensures that it remains on the skin's surface, where it can effectively scatter and reflect harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays. Research indicates that non-nano zinc oxide provides broad-spectrum protection against both UVA and UVB radiation, making it a preferred choice for sun protection formulations.

One of the primary benefits of non-nano zinc oxide is its non-toxic nature, which makes it suitable for sensitive skin types, including those prone to irritation or allergic reactions. Studies have shown that this ingredient is less likely to cause skin irritation compared to chemical sunscreens, which often contain synthetic compounds that can disrupt the skin barrier. Furthermore, non-nano zinc oxide is known for its soothing properties, providing additional benefits for individuals with conditions such as eczema or rosacea. Its ability to protect the skin while simultaneously offering anti-inflammatory benefits underscores its value in skincare formulations.

In addition to its skin-friendly attributes, non-nano zinc oxide is recognized for being reef safe. Many chemical sunscreens contain ingredients that have been linked to coral bleaching and other harmful effects on marine ecosystems. In contrast, non-nano zinc oxide does not contribute to these adverse environmental impacts, making it a responsible choice for consumers who are environmentally conscious. The use of non-nano zinc oxide in sunscreen products aligns with sustainable practices, as it helps protect both the user’s skin and the delicate marine life that inhabits our oceans.

Thanaka

Thanaka is a traditional Burmese skincare product that has been used for centuries to protect the skin from the harsh sun. Made from the ground bark of the Thanaka tree, this natural ingredient offers a multitude of benefits for sun protection.

One of the key advantages of Thanaka is its ability to provide a physical barrier against harmful UV rays. The bark of the Thanaka tree contains a compound called coumarin, which acts as a natural sunscreen. When applied to the skin, Thanaka forms a protective layer that reflects and scatters the sun's rays, reducing the risk of sunburn and skin damage.

Unlike chemical sunscreens, Thanaka is gentle on the skin and does not cause irritation or allergic reactions. It is suitable for all skin types, including sensitive skin. The natural properties of Thanaka also help to soothe and calm the skin, making it an ideal choice for those with sun-sensitive or easily irritated skin.

In addition to its sun protection properties, Thanaka offers other skincare benefits. It has natural astringent properties that help to tighten the skin and reduce the appearance of pores. Thanaka also has anti-inflammatory properties, which can help to reduce redness and inflammation caused by sun exposure.

Using Thanaka for sun protection is simple. The ground bark is typically mixed with water to form a paste, which is then applied to the face and other exposed areas of the body. The paste can be left on for a few minutes to allow the skin to absorb the beneficial properties of Thanaka, or it can be washed off after a short period of time.

When choosing a Thanaka product for sun protection, it is important to look for high-quality, pure forms of Thanaka. Helios Naturals offers a range of natural skincare products, including a Thanaka-based sun protection cream. Our Natural Sunpaste combines the sun-protective properties of Thanaka with other natural ingredients to provide effective and safe sun protection without harmful chemicals.

Protecting your skin from the sun is essential for maintaining its health and preventing premature aging.

Shea Butter

Shea butter is a natural fat extracted from the nuts of the shea tree (Vitellaria paradoxa), which is native to West Africa. This creamy substance has been utilized for centuries in various cultures for its moisturizing and healing properties. The composition of shea butter includes a high concentration of fatty acids, such as oleic, stearic, and linoleic acids, which contribute to its emollient characteristics. Additionally, shea butter is rich in vitamins A, E, and F, which are essential for maintaining healthy skin and promoting overall skin vitality.

Shea butter plays a pivotal role as a natural skin protector. While it does not provide a high level of sun protection on its own, it can enhance the effectiveness of other sun-blocking agents when used in formulations. The moisturizing properties of shea butter help maintain the skin's barrier function, which is crucial for preventing UV damage. Additionally, its soothing effects can alleviate the irritation caused by sun exposure, making it a valuable ingredient in eco-friendly sunscreen products.

The benefits of shea butter extend beyond mere hydration. Its anti-inflammatory properties make it an effective treatment for various skin conditions, including eczema and dermatitis. Studies have shown that the application of shea butter can significantly improve skin elasticity and reduce the appearance of scars and stretch marks. Furthermore, the presence of antioxidants in shea butter helps combat oxidative stress, which is a contributing factor to premature aging and skin damage.

Beeswax

Beeswax is a natural wax produced by honeybees, primarily composed of esters, fatty acids, and long-chain alcohols. It is secreted by the glands of worker bees and is used to construct honeycomb cells. The chemical structure of beeswax includes a variety of compounds, including palmitic acid, oleic acid, and myricyl palmitate, which contribute to its unique properties. This natural substance is not only biodegradable but also non-toxic, making it a preferred ingredient in various cosmetic formulations.

Beeswax plays a crucial role. It acts as a natural thickening agent, improving the consistency and application of the product. More importantly, beeswax contributes to the water resistance of sunscreens, allowing for longer-lasting protection against UV rays. When combined with other natural ingredients, beeswax enhances the overall efficacy of sunscreen products, providing a safer alternative to synthetic chemicals while ensuring effective sun protection.

One of the primary benefits of beeswax is its ability to create a protective barrier on the skin. This barrier helps to lock in moisture, preventing dehydration and maintaining skin hydration. Additionally, beeswax possesses anti-inflammatory properties, which can soothe irritated skin and reduce redness. Its natural emollient qualities make it an effective ingredient in skincare products, enhancing their moisturizing capabilities while providing a smooth texture.

Coconut Oil

Coconut oil is a natural oil extracted from the meat of mature coconuts, primarily found in tropical regions. It is composed of medium-chain fatty acids, predominantly lauric acid, which accounts for approximately 50% of its total fatty acid content. This unique composition contributes to its various health benefits and makes it a versatile ingredient in both culinary and cosmetic applications. Coconut oil is solid at room temperature but melts into a clear liquid when warmed, making it easy to incorporate into various formulations.

It offers a natural alternative for sun protection. While it does not provide a high level of sun protection factor (SPF) on its own—estimated to be around SPF 4—its application can still contribute to a broader sun protection strategy. When combined with other natural ingredients, coconut oil can enhance the effectiveness of sunscreen formulations by providing a moisturizing base that helps to soothe and protect the skin from UV damage. Its antioxidant properties may also aid in neutralizing free radicals generated by sun exposure, further supporting skin health.

The benefits of coconut oil extend beyond its culinary uses; it is widely recognized for its moisturizing properties. When applied to the skin, coconut oil acts as an emollient, helping to retain moisture and improve skin hydration. Studies have shown that coconut oil can enhance the skin barrier function, which is crucial for preventing transepidermal water loss. Additionally, its antimicrobial properties may help in reducing the risk of skin infections, making it a popular choice in natural skincare products.

Cacao Powder

Cacao powder is derived from the seeds of the cacao tree (Theobroma cacao), which is native to Central and South America. The process of creating cacao powder involves fermenting, drying, and roasting the cacao beans, followed by grinding them into a fine powder. This powder retains a significant amount of the beneficial compounds found in cacao, including flavonoids, antioxidants, and essential minerals such as magnesium, iron, and zinc. The nutritional profile of cacao powder makes it a valuable addition to various dietary regimens.

Cacao powder can play a role in enhancing the effectiveness of sunscreen formulations. Its antioxidant properties help protect the skin from free radical damage caused by UV exposure. Additionally, cacao powder contains natural compounds that can aid in skin hydration and nourishment. When incorporated into sunscreen products, it may provide an extra layer of protection, contributing to the overall efficacy of sun care formulations.

The benefits of cacao powder extend beyond its rich flavor and culinary uses. Its high antioxidant content, particularly flavonoids, has been shown to combat oxidative stress in the body. Studies indicate that antioxidants can help reduce inflammation and improve cardiovascular health by enhancing blood flow and lowering blood pressure. Furthermore, cacao powder contains theobromine, a compound that may contribute to improved mood and cognitive function, making it a popular choice for those seeking both health benefits and a mental boost. This makes cacao powder a noteworthy ingredient for those seeking to combine natural skincare with effective sun protection.

Cinnamon Oil

Cinnamon oil is an essential oil derived from the bark or leaves of the cinnamon tree, scientifically known as Cinnamomum verum or Cinnamomum cassia. This oil is characterized by its warm, spicy aroma and is widely recognized for its various therapeutic properties. These constituents contribute to the oil's antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties, making it a valuable addition to various health and skincare formulations.

Research indicates that cinnamon oil possesses significant antimicrobial activity, which can help protect the skin from harmful bacteria and fungi. Additionally, its anti-inflammatory properties can aid in reducing skin irritation and redness, making it suitable for sensitive skin types. Furthermore, the antioxidant properties of cinnamon oil help combat oxidative stress, which is a contributing factor to premature skin aging.

However, cinnamon oil is mostly used to give Helios a natural smell with aromatherapeutic benefits without using lab grown chemicals.

Why Helios?

It’s no secret modern sunscreen has failed us. It's littered with harmful chemicals such as oxybenzone and octinoxate.

These chemicals not only are toxic to human beings but they harm marine life by bleaching coral reefs. After all, sunscreen is a relatively new invention. It has only been around less than a century, created in 1932 by Australian chemist Milton Blake.

It makes us wonder about a few things. How did people protect themselves from the sun before 1932? And how come skin cancer cases have been consistently rising since 1975?

Humanity has been around for over 300,00 years. Surely there were solutions used by early civilizations to protect themselves from working in harsh conditions outside?

Ancient Greeks used olive oil, the ancient Egyptians used rice, jasmine, and lupine plants, various seafaring tribes in the Philippines and Polynesia used Borak made from water weeds and in Myanmar a Thanaka paste is used.

The point is, humanity has been protecting itself from prolonged sun exposure for quite some time and it’s about time we returned to our roots.

As an outdoor enthusiast it’s always been a challenge to find the right sunscreen that protects you from prolonged sun exposure without long term damage to yourself or your surroundings.

Helios is proud to be sourced with all natural ingredients, our only active ingredient in nano-zinc oxide.

It's about time we returned to nature.
